Globetrotters Club
An after school or holiday club of 6 x 2 hour sessions when each week the Globetrotters “visit” a country to find out about it and then look in more detail at an issue such as Fairtrade, energy or food miles.
What is the aim of the club?
- To improve open-mindedness, attitude to learning and attainment amongst children through a shared experience about people, places and global issues affecting us all.
- To show children the connections and similarities they have with people from different cultural backgrounds and countries.
-
Who is it for?
- Children (7 yrs and over), and young people
- Up to 15 participants
What actually happens?
The club is based around a passport and each session will be based around a country that may or may not reflects a minority group within the local community. (Countries are chosen in advance after consultation with the club members). Whenever possible, a visitor from the minority ethnic group within the local community will join the session.
After an initial introduction to the country, quizzes and games, often using artefacts from our Resource Centre focus in on a particular theme. For example, children could visit Nepal and investigate the most precious of commodities - water! Alternatively, children might want to visit Australia to discover how the minority aboriginal people express their culture through art. Most sessions include the children sitting down together to eat a snack that reflects the country being visited. This also provides a time for reflection, questions and sharing.
Everyone has entry and exit visas stamped in their passport each session which provides a vehicle for the session leader to check on knowledge learnt.
What does the school/centre need to do or provide?
- An open space, preferably a hall.
- Make contact with potential visitors from minority groups within the local community who would be prepared to come and join in, answering questions and/or helping with food preparation.
- Materials for writing, cutting and sticking, if needed
- A ‘helper’ each week – depending on numbers.
